Orange Rolls are soft, fluffy sweet rolls filled with a buttery orange-sugar filling and finished with a bright citrus glaze. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, holidays, or a special weekend treat, these homemade rolls are bursting with fresh orange flavor.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Active dry yeast or instant yeast
  • Warm milk
  • Granulated sugar
  • Unsalted butter, softened (plus additional for filling)
  • Eggs
  • Salt
  • Fresh orange zest
  • Brown sugar
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh orange juice
  • Vanilla extract
  • Heavy cream or milk (optional, for glaze consistency)

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar in a large bowl. Let stand for 5–10 minutes until foamy if using active dry yeast.
  2. Add the remaining sugar, butter, eggs, orange zest, and salt. Mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 to 1½ hours until doubled.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it into a large rectangle.
  7. Spread softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with the brown sugar, granulated sugar, and orange zest.
  8. Roll the dough into a log and slice into 12 equal rolls.
  9. Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for 30–45 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Bake for 22–28 minutes until lightly golden.
  12. Whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, vanilla extract, and enough cream or milk to make a smooth glaze.
  13. Spread the glaze over the warm rolls before serving.

Notes

  • Fresh orange zest provides the best citrus flavor.
  • Prepare the rolls the night before and refrigerate after shaping for an easy morning bake.
  • Freeze baked rolls for up to 3 months.
  • Try adding dried cranberries, chopped pecans, or a pinch of cinnamon to the filling for variation.
  • Serve warm for the softest texture.
