Guava Applesauce is a naturally sweet blend of tender apples and tropical guava with a hint of cinnamon and vanilla. This smooth, fruity sauce is delicious served warm or chilled as a wholesome snack, breakfast topping, or light dessert.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium fresh apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 fresh guavas, peeled, seeded if needed, and chopped (or 1 cup guava pulp)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples into evenly sized pieces.
  2. Peel and chop the guava, removing any tough seeds if necessary.
  3. Combine the apples, guava, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is very soft.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract and add honey or maple syrup if additional sweetness is desired.
  6. Mash the fruit with a potato masher for a chunky texture or blend with an immersion blender until smooth.
  7. Allow the applesauce to cool slightly before serving warm or refrigerate until chilled.

Notes

  • Use naturally sweet apples such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady for the best flavor.
  • Fresh, frozen, or canned guava pulp can be used; adjust the sweetener if using sweetened guava.
  • Add fresh ginger, nutmeg, or cardamom for extra warmth and flavor.
  • For baby food, blend until completely smooth and omit any added sweeteners.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Serve on oatmeal, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, or enjoy on its own.
