Wisconsin Butter-Basted Burgers are juicy beef burgers cooked with melted butter for exceptional flavor, tenderness, and a beautifully caramelized crust. This Midwest-inspired favorite is perfect for cookouts, family dinners, and burger nights.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Sliced cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Lettuce (optional)
  • Tomato slices (optional)
  • Sliced onions (optional)
  • Pickles (optional)
  • Mustard (optional)
  • Ketchup (optional)
  • Mayonnaise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions.
  2. Gently shape each portion into a patty slightly larger than the buns.
  3. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
  4. Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  5. Place the patties onto the hot cooking surface.
  6. Cook for 3–4 minutes on the first side until a deep golden crust forms.
  7. Flip the burgers.
  8. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet for each burger.
  9. As the butter melts, continuously spoon the melted butter over the patties.
  10. Continue cooking for another 3–4 minutes or until the burgers reach your desired doneness.
  11. If using cheese, place a slice on each burger during the final minute of cooking.
  12. Lightly toast the hamburger buns if desired.
  13. Transfer the burgers to the buns.
  14. Add your favorite toppings.
  15. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • An 80/20 ground beef blend provides the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
  • Cast iron helps create a deeply browned crust.
  • Season the outside of the patties rather than mixing seasonings into the meat.
  • Store cooked patties in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze cooked or uncooked patties for up to 3 months.
  • Serve with fries, onion rings, potato salad, coleslaw, or cheese curds.
