Tzatziki is a cool, creamy Mediterranean yogurt sauce made with fresh cucumber, garlic, herbs, and lemon juice. It’s a refreshing dip or condiment that pairs perfectly with grilled meats, vegetables, pita bread, and salads.

Ingredients

  • Greek yogurt
  • Cucumber, grated and excess moisture squeezed out
  • Garlic, minced
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Fresh dill, chopped
  • Fresh mint, chopped (optional)
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Grate the cucumber and squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  2. Place the Greek yogurt in a medium mixing bowl.
  3. Stir in the grated cucumber, minced garlic, fresh lemon juice, olive oil, chopped dill, and mint if using.
  4. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  5. Mix until smooth and evenly combined.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Stir before serving and drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil if desired.

Notes

  • Add extra fresh dill for a stronger herb flavor.
  • Use both dill and mint for a more traditional flavor.
  • Stir in crumbled feta cheese for added richness.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes for gentle heat.
  • Substitute red wine vinegar for the lemon juice for a different tang.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Stir well before serving if any liquid separates.
  • Do not freeze, as the texture may become watery after thawing.
