This Tuna Grilled Cheese Sandwich combines creamy tuna salad with gooey melted cheese between slices of crispy, buttery bread. It’s a comforting, satisfying meal that’s perfect for a quick lunch or easy dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (5 ounces each) tuna, drained
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons red onion, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices sourdough or thick white bread
  • 8 slices cheddar, American, Swiss, or provolone cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery, red onion, pickle relish, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper until well mixed.
  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Place four slices of bread buttered-side down on a clean work surface.
  4. Top each slice with one piece of cheese.
  5. Spread an even layer of the tuna mixture over the cheese.
  6. Add a second slice of cheese on top of the tuna mixture.
  7. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered-side facing out.
  8. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
  9. Cook the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  10. Let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • Add sliced tomatoes, spinach, or arugula for extra freshness.
  • Mix chopped jalapeños into the tuna salad or use pepper jack cheese for a spicy variation.
  • Spread pesto on the bread for an herby twist.
  • Store leftover tuna salad in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat assembled sandwiches in a skillet, oven, or air fryer for the crispiest results instead of using a microwave.
