Trader Joe’s Chili Onion Crunch is a savory, spicy condiment packed with crispy onions, garlic, chili flakes, and aromatic oil. This homemade version delivers bold flavor and irresistible crunch that can elevate everything from eggs and noodles to vegetables and rice bowls.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 6 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 2 tablespoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and cook slowly, stirring frequently, for 15–20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Add the sliced garlic and cook for 2–3 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Remove the onions and garlic with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a heatproof bowl.
  5. Stir in the dried minced onion, red pepper flakes, paprika, sesame seeds, sugar, and salt.
  6. Allow the oil to cool for 1–2 minutes.
  7. Carefully pour the warm oil over the onion and spice mixture.
  8. Stir thoroughly to combine.
  9. Allow the mixture to cool completely.
  10. Transfer to a clean glass jar and store refrigerated.
