Tofu Nuggets are crispy, golden-brown bites of extra-firm tofu coated in a seasoned breadcrumb crust. Packed with plant-based protein and perfect for dipping, these nuggets are a family-friendly meal or snack that can be baked, air-fried, or pan-fried.

Ingredients

  • 1 block (14 ounces) extra-firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut the tofu into bite-sized nugget pieces.
  3. Toss the tofu with soy sauce and olive oil.
  4. In one bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  5. In a second bowl, whisk together the plant-based milk and cornstarch.
  6. In a third bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, and paprika.
  7. Dip each tofu piece into the flour mixture.
  8. Coat it in the milk mixture.
  9. Roll it in the breadcrumb mixture until fully covered.
  10. Place the coated nuggets on a baking sheet or air fryer tray.
  11. For baking, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  12. For air frying, cook at 400°F (204°C) for 12–15 minutes, shaking or flipping halfway through.
  13. Cook until golden brown and crispy.
  14. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Extra-firm tofu provides the best texture and crispiness.
  • For gluten-free nuggets, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
  • Try buffalo sauce, barbecue sauce, ranch seasoning, or Parmesan-style coatings for variation.
  • Freeze cooked nuggets for up to 2 months in a freezer-safe container.
  • Reheat in an oven or air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 5–8 minutes to restore crispness.
  • Avoid overcrowding the baking sheet or air fryer basket for the crispiest results.
