These festive Snowman Cupcakes combine soft vanilla cupcakes with creamy white frosting and cheerful snowman faces. They are an easy, family-friendly treat for Christmas parties and winter celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened, for frosting
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, for frosting
  • Pinch of salt, for frosting
  • Mini chocolate chips or black decorating candies
  • Orange decorating candies, orange fondant, or orange sprinkles for the noses
  • White sanding sugar or shredded coconut, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl until evenly combined.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix just until combined, taking care not to overmix.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each approximately two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool briefly in the pan, then transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack and cool completely.
  7. To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, then add the vanilla, salt, and enough heavy cream or milk to make a smooth, spreadable frosting.
  8. Spread or pipe the white frosting generously over the completely cooled cupcakes. Sprinkle with white sanding sugar or shredded coconut for a snowy texture, if desired.
  9. Arrange mini chocolate chips or black decorating candies on each cupcake to form the snowman’s eyes and mouth. Add a small orange candy, piece of orange fondant, or orange sprinkle for the carrot-shaped nose.
  10. Serve the decorated cupcakes immediately or keep them covered until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For a shortcut version, use prepared vanilla or white cake mix and store-bought vanilla frosting.
  • For chocolate snowmen, substitute your favorite chocolate cupcake batter while keeping the frosting white.
  • Press shredded coconut gently into freshly applied frosting for a fluffy, snow-covered appearance.
  • Create melting snowmen by placing the faces slightly off-center and arranging the decorations irregularly.
  • Add decorations immediately after frosting so they adhere securely.
  • A piping bag is not required; the frosting can be spread with a spoon or small offset spatula.
  • Store decorated cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for 1–2 days when appropriate for the frosting, or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
  • Undecorated cupcakes can be wrapped well and frozen for up to 2–3 months. Thaw completely at room temperature before decorating.
  • Bring refrigerated cupcakes to room temperature for about 20–30 minutes before serving. Do not reheat decorated cupcakes.
