Smash Burgers are juicy, crispy-edged burgers cooked on a hot griddle or skillet for maximum flavor and caramelization. Thin smashed beef patties develop a rich golden crust while staying tender inside, creating a classic diner-style burger that’s quick, flavorful, and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 8 pickle slices
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 4 slices bacon (optional)
  • 1/2 cup caramelized onions (optional)
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup burger sauce (optional)
  • 1 avocado, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 loosely packed balls.
  2. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over high heat until very hot.
  3. Lightly butter or oil the cooking surface.
  4. Place the beef balls onto the hot skillet.
  5. Immediately press each ball down firmly with a spatula or burger press until thin.
  6. Season the patties with salt and black pepper.
  7. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until crispy edges form.
  8. Flip the burgers and immediately add cheese if desired.
  9. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese melts and the burgers are cooked through.
  10. Toast the burger buns lightly if desired.
  11. Assemble the burgers with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, and any desired toppings or sauces.
  12. Serve immediately while hot and juicy.
