Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a savory onion and mushroom gravy. It’s hearty, flavorful, and perfect for pairing with mashed potatoes or noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (mixed with 2 tbsp water)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  2. Shape mixture into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Sear patties on both sides until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter. Sauté onions and mushrooms until softened and browned.
  5. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Stir and bring to a simmer.
  6. Whisk in cornstarch slurry to thicken the gravy.
  7. Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over, and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Notes

  • Use 85% lean ground beef for the best flavor and tenderness.
  • Do not overmix the beef mixture—this keeps patties tender.
  • If gravy is too thick, thin with a splash of broth. If too thin, add more cornstarch slurry.
  • Mushrooms can be omitted or replaced with more onions.
