Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard evenly over the pastry.

  5. Sprinkle Gruyere cheese, parmesan cheese, and chopped sage evenly on top.
  6. Season lightly with black pepper and add any optional ingredients such as caramelized onions or walnuts.
  7. Roll the pastry tightly into a log shape.
  8. Chill the roll for about 15 minutes to make slicing easier.
  9. Slice the log into 1-inch thick pinwheels.
  10. Arrange the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet.
  11. Brush the tops lightly with beaten egg.
  12. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  13. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Store-bought puff pastry works perfectly for quick preparation.
  • Gruyere can be replaced with Swiss, fontina, or mozzarella cheese.
  • Chilling the pastry before slicing helps maintain the pinwheel shape.
  • A light honey drizzle after baking adds a delicious sweet and savory contrast.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer for the crispiest texture.
  • Freeze unbaked pinwheels for up to 2 months.
