A fragrant and elegant rice dish infused with delicate saffron for a golden color and subtle floral aroma. This simple yet luxurious side pairs beautifully with a variety of meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain rice (such as basmati)
  • 2 cups water or broth
  • 1/4 tsp saffron threads
  • 2 tbsp warm water (for blooming saffron)
  • 1 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Soak saffron threads in warm water for 5–10 minutes.
  3. Heat butter or olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Sauté onion until soft, then add garlic and cook briefly if using.
  4. Add the rice and stir for 1 minute to lightly toast.
  5. Pour in water or broth along with saffron and its soaking liquid. Add salt and stir gently.
  6. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15–18 minutes until liquid is absorbed.
  7. Remove from heat and let sit covered for 5 minutes.
  8. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Notes

  • Use broth instead of water for deeper flavor.
  • Add vegetables like peas or carrots for color and nutrition.
  • Stir in toasted nuts for extra texture.
  • Add dried fruits like raisins for a sweet contrast.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
  • Reheat with a splash of water or broth to restore moisture.
