Ingredients
2 cups milk or unsweetened plant-based milk
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Reishi mushroom powder, according to the product’s serving directions
1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Small pinch of salt
Ice cubes, optional for serving cold
Instructions
Combine the cocoa powder, reishi mushroom powder, cinnamon, and salt in a small saucepan.
Gradually whisk in a small amount of milk to form a smooth paste, then slowly whisk in the remaining milk.
Warm over medium-low heat, whisking occasionally, until steaming but not vigorously boiling.
Remove from the heat and stir in the maple syrup or honey and vanilla. Taste and adjust the sweetness as desired.
For a frothy drink, carefully blend or froth the warm mixture until lightly foamed. For a cold version, blend all the ingredients with chilled milk until smooth and serve over ice.
Divide between two glasses or mugs and serve immediately, optionally garnished with cocoa powder or cinnamon.
Notes
Follow the serving directions on the specific reishi product because powders and extracts can vary considerably in concentration.
For a mocha variation, add a shot of espresso or a small amount of strong brewed coffee.
Ground ginger, cardamom, or nutmeg can be added for extra warmth and spice.
Whole milk, oat milk, or coconut milk creates a particularly creamy drink.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and shake or whisk thoroughly before serving.
Reishi supplements may cause side effects or interact with medications and may not be appropriate for everyone. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use if pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a medical condition, or preparing the drink for a child.
