  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the black beans and vegetable broth or water.
  5. Stir in salt, black pepper, cumin, and chili powder.
  6. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
  7. Mash the beans using a potato masher or the back of a spoon to your desired consistency.
  8. Continue cooking for a few more minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened.
  9. Stir in lime juice if desired and adjust seasoning to taste.
  10. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Add jalapeños or chili flakes for extra heat.
  • Blend for a smoother, dip-like consistency.
  • Use smoked paprika for a deeper flavor.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Add a splash of broth when reheating to loosen the texture.
