Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Mix in the vegetable oil, buttermilk, vanilla extract, vinegar, and red food coloring.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  8. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  9. Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
  12. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until light and fluffy.
  13. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top.
  14. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  15. Decorate with cake crumbs, white chocolate shavings, or fresh berries if desired.
