The Philly Cheesesteak is an iconic sandwich from Philadelphia that combines tender thinly sliced beef, sautéed onions, melted cheese, and a crusty hoagie roll. It’s a savory, satisfying meal that’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or any time you crave a hearty sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ribeye steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 8 slices of provolone cheese (or American cheese or cheese whiz)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting rolls)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions (and bell peppers if using) to the skillet and sauté for about 5 minutes, until softened and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Season the sliced steak with salt and pepper. Add it to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through.
  4. Add the cooked onions and peppers back into the skillet and mix with the beef.
  5. Split the hoagie rolls and lightly butter the insides. Toast the rolls in a separate pan or griddle until golden brown.
  6. Once the steak and vegetables are well combined, divide the mixture into portions for each sandwich. Place the cheese slices on top of the steak mixture and allow it to melt, about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Carefully transfer the cheesy steak mixture into the toasted rolls and serve hot.

Notes

  • Try different cheese options: Provolone, American, or even cheese whiz for an authentic Philly experience.
  • If you prefer a spicy kick, add jalapeños or drizzle hot sauce over the sandwich.
  • For a lighter option, swap beef for chicken or turkey.
