A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a quick, nostalgic favorite made with nutty peanut butter, sweet fruit spread, and soft bread. It takes just five minutes to prepare and makes an easy breakfast, lunch, or snack.

Ingredients

  • Sandwich bread
  • Peanut butter, creamy or crunchy
  • Grape jelly, strawberry jam, or another favorite fruit spread
  • Butter, optional for a toasted version
  • Honey, optional
  • Sliced banana, optional

Instructions

  1. Place two slices of bread on a clean plate or cutting board.
  2. Spread an even layer of peanut butter over one side of the first bread slice, taking it close to the edges.
  3. Spread the jelly or jam evenly over the second slice of bread.
  4. Place the two slices together with the peanut butter and jelly sides facing inward.
  5. Gently press the sandwich together without squeezing the filling out of the sides.
  6. Cut the sandwich in half or into triangles and serve immediately.
  7. For a toasted version, lightly butter the outside of the sandwich and cook in a skillet over medium-low heat until both sides are golden and the filling is warm.

Notes

  • Use creamy peanut butter for a smooth filling or crunchy peanut butter for extra texture.
  • Grape jelly is a classic choice, but strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, or apricot preserves also work well.
  • Add sliced banana, honey, cinnamon, granola, or chopped nuts for additional flavor and texture.
  • Whole-wheat or multigrain bread makes a heartier sandwich, while brioche provides a softer, richer option.
  • For packed lunches, spread peanut butter on both bread slices and place the jelly between the peanut butter layers to help prevent sogginess.
  • A prepared sandwich can be wrapped tightly or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1–2 days.
  • Reheat a toasted PB&J in a skillet over low heat or in a toaster oven until the bread is crisp again.
