Pasta with Peas is a simple, comforting Italian-inspired dish featuring tender pasta and sweet green peas tossed in a light, savory sauce with garlic, onion, and Parmesan. It’s a quick and versatile meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights or as an easy side dish.

Ingredients

  • Pasta such as ditalini, shells, penne, or farfalle
  • Frozen or fresh green peas
  • Olive oil
  • Unsalted butter
  • Onion, finely chopped
  • Garlic, minced
  • Vegetable broth or chicken broth
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until al dente.
  2. Reserve a small amount of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta.
  3. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook the onion until softened, then stir in the garlic until fragrant.
  5. Add the peas and broth, cooking until the peas are tender.
  6. Stir in the cooked pasta and toss everything together.
  7. Add the Parmesan cheese along with a splash of the reserved pasta water to create a light, silky sauce.
  8. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if desired.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley and extra Parmesan before serving.

Notes

  • Frozen peas can be added directly without thawing.
  • Add crispy pancetta or bacon for a smoky variation.
  • Stir in baby spinach, asparagus, or mushrooms for extra vegetables.
  • Mix in grilled chicken, shrimp, or white beans for added protein.
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon juice brightens the flavors.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat gently with a splash of broth or water to restore the sauce.
