A creamy, refreshing smoothie made with juicy oranges, tangy kefir, ripe banana, and vanilla. This bright citrus drink comes together in minutes for an easy breakfast or snack.

Ingredients

  • Fresh oranges
  • Plain kefir milk
  • Ripe banana
  • Honey or maple syrup, optional
  • Vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes, optional
  • Orange zest, optional
  • Ground cinnamon or ginger, optional

Instructions

  1. Peel the oranges and separate them into segments. Remove any seeds and as much thick white pith as practical to prevent bitterness.
  2. Peel and slice the ripe banana. Use frozen banana slices for a thicker, colder smoothie if desired.
  3. Pour the kefir into the blender, then add the orange segments, banana, vanilla extract, and optional honey or maple syrup. Add ice cubes if desired.
  4. Blend on high for 30 to 60 seconds, or until completely smooth and creamy.
  5. Taste the smoothie and add a little honey or maple syrup if the oranges are particularly tart. If the smoothie is too thick, blend in another splash of kefir.
  6. Pour into glasses and serve immediately. Garnish with optional orange zest, cinnamon, or ginger.

Notes

  • Remove thick white pith from the oranges when possible because excessive pith can add bitterness.
  • Frozen banana or frozen orange segments create a thicker, frostier smoothie without requiring as much ice.
  • For variations, blend in frozen mango, strawberries, pineapple, or a small piece of fresh ginger.
  • For a creamsicle-inspired flavor, use frozen banana and add a little extra vanilla.
  • Orange juice can replace whole oranges, but use a smaller amount initially because it adds more liquid.
  • Fresh citrus and kefir may separate as they sit, so the smoothie is best served immediately.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours and shake or stir thoroughly before drinking.
