Soft, fudgy chocolate crinkle cookies with a bright burst of fresh orange zest and rich cocoa flavor. A generous powdered sugar coating creates their dramatic cracked exterior while the centers stay moist and brownie-like.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Baking powder
  • Fine salt
  • Granulated sugar, for the cookie dough
  • Large eggs
  • Unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • Fresh orange zest
  • Fresh orange juice
  • Vanilla extract
  • Dark chocolate, finely chopped or melted, optional
  • Granulated sugar, for rolling
  • Powdered sugar, for rolling

Instructions

  1. Whisk the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl, breaking up any large lumps of cocoa powder.
  2. Place the granulated sugar for the dough and finely grated orange zest in a large mixing bowl. Rub the zest into the sugar with your fingertips for 1 to 2 minutes to release the fragrant citrus oils.
  3. Whisk the eggs into the orange sugar until smooth and slightly lighter in color. Add the melted and cooled butter, orange juice, and vanilla extract. If using melted dark chocolate, let it cool slightly before mixing it in.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir just until evenly combined. The dough should remain soft and sticky; do not add extra flour.
  5. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight, until thoroughly chilled and firm enough to shape.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Place granulated sugar in one shallow bowl and powdered sugar in another.
  7. Scoop portions of chilled dough and quickly roll them into balls. Roll each ball lightly in granulated sugar and then very generously in powdered sugar, completely covering the chocolate dough with a thick white coating.
  8. Arrange the coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between them for spreading.
  9. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the surfaces are dramatically cracked and the edges are set while the centers remain slightly soft.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Do not add extra flour to the sticky dough, as the soft consistency helps create fudgy, brownie-like centers.
  • Chill the dough for at least 2 hours to make shaping easier and prevent excessive spreading.
  • For the strongest crinkle effect, roll each dough ball first in granulated sugar and then generously in powdered sugar without shaking off the excess.
  • For stronger orange flavor, add more fresh zest rather than excessive orange juice, which can alter the dough consistency.
  • Finely chopped bittersweet chocolate or chocolate chips can be added for an extra-rich chocolate variation.
  • Cinnamon, cardamom, ground ginger, or instant espresso powder can be added for additional flavor.
  • The dough can be prepared 1 to 2 days ahead and kept covered in the refrigerator.
  • Store completely cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
  • Baked cookies can be frozen for up to 2 months, although the powdered sugar coating may lose some of its bright white appearance.
  • Unbaked dough can also be frozen and thawed in the refrigerator before shaping, coating, and baking.
