Orange Chiffon Cake is a light and airy citrus dessert made with fresh orange juice and zest for a bright, refreshing flavor. Its soft sponge-like texture and delicate sweetness make it perfect for celebrations, tea parties, or elegant everyday desserts.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 large eggs, separated
  • 3/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Leave an ungreased tube pan ready.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cake flour, 1 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the vegetable oil, egg yolks, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  4. In another clean bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  5. Gradually add the remaining sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
  6. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter in batches, being careful not to deflate the mixture.
  7. Pour the batter into the ungreased tube pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 50–60 minutes or until the top springs back when lightly touched.
  9. Immediately invert the pan and allow the cake to cool completely upside down.
  10. Carefully loosen the cake from the pan once cooled.
  11. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest until smooth, then drizzle over the cake if desired.

Notes

  • Fresh orange juice and zest provide the best citrus flavor.
  • Cooling the cake upside down helps maintain its airy structure.
  • Add lemon zest or shredded coconut for flavor variations.
  • Store covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze the cake without glaze for up to 2 months and thaw overnight before serving.
