A fresh Italian-style Caprese salad featuring ripe tomatoes, creamy fresh mozzarella, fragrant basil, and extra-virgin olive oil. Simple seasonings let the fresh ingredients shine in this elegant appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients

  • Ripe heirloom tomatoes or vine-ripened tomatoes
  • Fresh mozzarella
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze, optional
  • Fresh oregano leaves, optional

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the tomatoes and basil. Slice larger tomatoes into thick rounds or wedges, or halve smaller tomatoes.
  2. Drain the fresh mozzarella thoroughly. Slice a large ball into thick pieces or gently tear it into irregular pieces for a rustic presentation.
  3. Arrange the tomatoes across a large serving platter, slightly overlapping some of the pieces.
  4. Tuck the mozzarella between and around the tomatoes so each serving includes both tomato and cheese.
  5. Scatter fresh basil leaves over the tomatoes and mozzarella, tearing larger leaves by hand if needed.
  6. Drizzle the salad generously with extra-virgin olive oil.
  7. Season with flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  8. If desired, finish with a very light drizzle of balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze for additional sweetness and acidity.
  9. Let the salad rest for about 5 minutes before serving so the tomato juices, olive oil, and seasonings can mingle.

Notes

  • For an extra-creamy variation, replace the fresh mozzarella with burrata and arrange the seasoned tomatoes around it.
  • Use a mixture of colorful heirloom tomatoes when available for varied sweetness, acidity, and presentation.
  • For extra texture, add a modest amount of toasted pine nuts, pistachios, or homemade breadcrumbs just before serving.
  • Red wine vinegar can replace balsamic vinegar, or add freshly grated lemon zest for extra brightness.
  • For a heartier salad, serve over arugula or add slices of ripe avocado.
  • Caprese salad is best served fresh and around room temperature.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 days.
  • Before serving leftovers, let the salad sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes, then refresh it with fresh basil, olive oil, and salt as needed.
