Ingredients

  • 12 mozzarella cheese sticks
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil for frying or cooking spray for air frying
  • 1 cup marinara sauce for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the mozzarella sticks in half if desired.
  2. Place the cheese sticks in the freezer for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Prepare three shallow bowls with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs mixed with Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Coat each mozzarella stick in flour, then egg, and finally the breadcrumb mixture.
  5. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating for a thicker crust.
  6. Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks again for 15 to 20 minutes before cooking.
  7. Heat oil for frying to 350°F or preheat the air fryer to 390°F.
  8. Cook the mozzarella sticks for 6 to 8 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove carefully and drain excess oil if frying.
  10. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Freezing the cheese sticks helps prevent the cheese from leaking during cooking.
  • Panko breadcrumbs create an extra crispy coating.
  • Air frying is a lighter alternative to deep frying.
  • Cheddar or pepper jack cheese can be used for flavor variations.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or air fryer.
  • Ranch dressing, garlic aioli, or spicy marinara make excellent dipping sauces.
