This Monte Cristo Sandwich is a classic sweet-and-savory favorite made with layers of ham, turkey, and melted cheese between golden, buttery bread. Finished with powdered sugar and fruit preserves, it’s perfect for brunch, lunch, or dinner.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices brioche or thick white bread
  • 8 slices deli ham
  • 8 slices deli turkey
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Raspberry, strawberry, or blackberry preserves, for serving

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, and vanilla extract in a shallow bowl until well combined.
  2. Assemble each sandwich by layering Swiss cheese, ham, turkey, cheddar cheese, and a second slice of bread.
  3. Gently press each sandwich together to help keep the fillings in place.
  4. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the butter.
  5. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides evenly without oversoaking the bread.
  6. Cook the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  7. Transfer the sandwiches to a cutting board and let them rest for 1 minute.
  8. Dust lightly with powdered sugar.
  9. Slice each sandwich in half and serve warm with fruit preserves for dipping.

Notes

  • Substitute Gruyère for Swiss cheese for a richer flavor.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon to the egg mixture for a subtle sweet note.
  • Spread Dijon mustard or mayonnaise inside the sandwich for extra flavor.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat in a skillet, oven, or air fryer for the crispiest results.
  • Avoid microwaving if possible, as it softens the crisp exterior.
