Ingredients
Fresh lemons
Fresh mint leaves
Cold water
Granulated sugar
Ice cubes
Lemon slices, optional for serving
Fresh mint sprigs, optional for serving
Instructions
Combine equal parts granulated sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely, then remove from the heat and let the simple syrup cool.
Rinse the mint leaves and pat them dry. Lightly crush or tear some of the leaves to release their aroma without overworking them.
Roll the lemons firmly on the counter, cut them in half, and squeeze out the juice. Remove any seeds.
Pour the fresh lemon juice into a large pitcher. Add the cooled simple syrup and cold water, then stir until well combined.
Add the fresh mint leaves and stir gently. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes to chill the lemonade and allow the mint to infuse.
Taste the chilled lemonade. Add more simple syrup if it is too tart or additional cold water if it is too sweet or concentrated.
Fill glasses with ice and pour in the mint lemonade. Garnish with lemon slices and fresh mint sprigs if desired, then serve immediately.
Notes
Avoid aggressively crushing the mint because overworked leaves can contribute a bitter or grassy flavor.
For longer storage, strain out the infused mint leaves and add fresh mint when serving.
Store covered in the refrigerator for 2–3 days.
Keep ice out of the storage pitcher to prevent the lemonade from becoming diluted.
For sparkling mint lemonade, replace some or all of the cold water with chilled sparkling water just before serving.
For frozen mint lemonade, blend the lemonade with plenty of ice until thick and slushy.
