Mashed Sweet Potatoes are a creamy, buttery side dish with plenty of natural sweetness and a smooth, fluffy texture. They can be seasoned simply with salt and pepper or customized with warm spices, maple syrup, garlic, or fresh herbs.

Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Unsalted butter
  • Milk or heavy cream
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Ground cinnamon, optional
  • Maple syrup or brown sugar, optional
  • Fresh parsley or thyme, optional

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks.
  2. Place the sweet potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water.
  3. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork.
  4. Drain the sweet potatoes thoroughly and return them to the warm pot. Let them sit briefly so excess moisture can evaporate.
  5. Add the butter and mash the sweet potatoes until they reach the desired texture.
  6. Gradually add warm milk or heavy cream while continuing to mash, using only enough to create a creamy consistency without making the potatoes runny.
  7. Season with salt and black pepper. For a sweeter variation, add ground cinnamon and a small amount of maple syrup or brown sugar.
  8. Taste and adjust the seasoning, then transfer the mashed sweet potatoes to a serving bowl.
  9. Finish with additional butter and, for a savory version, fresh parsley or thyme before serving.

Notes

  • Cut the sweet potatoes into evenly sized pieces so they cook at approximately the same rate.
  • Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly and let excess moisture evaporate before mashing to prevent a watery texture.
  • Add milk or cream gradually because additional liquid can always be added if needed.
  • For Maple Mashed Sweet Potatoes, add pure maple syrup and a little cinnamon.
  • For a savory garlic variation, add roasted or sautéed garlic and finish with black pepper and fresh herbs.
  • For Brown Butter Mashed Sweet Potatoes, brown the butter until golden and nutty before mixing it into the potatoes.
  • For a warmly spiced variation, add ground cinnamon and a small pinch of nutmeg.
  • For extra-creamy potatoes, use heavy cream instead of milk and add additional butter as desired.
  • Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
  • Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave with a splash of milk or cream and additional butter if needed.
