Margherita Pizza is a classic Italian favorite made with a crisp crust, rich tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil. Simple, fresh ingredients come together to create an authentic homemade pizza that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 ball pizza dough
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce or crushed San Marzano tomatoes
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C) with a pizza stone or baking steel inside for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Roll or stretch the pizza dough into a 12-inch round and place it on parchment paper.
  3. Lightly brush the dough with olive oil.
  4. Spread the pizza sauce or crushed San Marzano tomatoes evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Arrange the fresh mozzarella slices evenly across the pizza.
  6. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Carefully transfer the pizza onto the hot pizza stone or baking steel.
  8. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  9. Remove the pizza from the oven and top with fresh basil leaves.
  10. Finish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and grated Parmesan cheese if desired. Slice and serve.

Notes

  • Substitute burrata for fresh mozzarella for an extra creamy variation.
  • Add sliced fresh tomatoes for additional freshness.
  • Sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Drizzle with balsamic glaze before serving for a sweet and tangy finish.
  • Add fresh oregano or thyme for extra herbal flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze slices for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat in a 375°F (190°C) oven or a skillet to restore a crisp crust.
