Lemonade Shake-Ups are refreshing fair-style drinks made by vigorously shaking fresh lemon, sugar, cold water, and ice. Lemon pieces release fragrant citrus oils while shaking, creating an intensely fresh sweet-tart lemonade in minutes.

Ingredients

  • Fresh lemons
  • Granulated sugar
  • Cold water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices or wedges, for serving
  • Fresh mint, optional

Instructions

  1. Wash the lemons thoroughly because both the juice and pieces of peel are used in the drink.
  2. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a large jar or sturdy cocktail shaker with a secure lid.
  3. Cut part of the squeezed lemon into wedges or chunks and add them to the container. Gently press the pieces to release additional juice and aromatic oils from the peel.
  4. Add the granulated sugar directly to the lemon juice and lemon pieces.
  5. Pour in the cold water and add a generous handful of ice cubes, leaving enough empty space for the ingredients to move while shaking.
  6. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for 30–60 seconds, or until the drink is thoroughly chilled and most of the sugar has dissolved.
  7. Taste and adjust the lemonade, adding more sugar for sweetness or additional cold water if the citrus flavor is too concentrated.
  8. Pour the lemonade, ice, and lemon pieces into a tall glass.
  9. Garnish with an additional lemon slice or fresh mint, if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Fresh lemons provide the brightest flavor and aromatic citrus oils from the peel.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar to make the lemonade sweeter or more tart according to preference.
  • For strawberry or raspberry lemonade, gently mash fresh berries in the container before adding the water and ice.
  • For an herbal variation, gently bruise fresh mint or basil leaves before adding them.
  • Limes can replace some or all of the lemons for a limeade or mixed-citrus shake-up.
  • For a sparkling version, never shake carbonated water in a tightly sealed container. Shake the lemon mixture with still water and ice first, then add sparkling water after opening the container.
  • For make-ahead preparation, combine lemon juice, sugar, and water without ice and refrigerate in a covered container. Add fresh ice before shaking and serving.
  • Refrigerate prepared lemonade for up to 3–4 days and remove lemon pieces before extended storage to prevent bitterness from the peel.
