Jackfruit Sloppy Joes offer a delicious, plant-based twist on the classic Sloppy Joe, with tender jackfruit absorbing a rich, tangy, and sweet sauce. Perfect for vegan and gluten-free diets, this hearty meal is quick, flavorful, and satisfying.

Ingredients

  1. 1 can (20 oz) young green jackfruit in brine (not syrup), drained and shredded
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    1 small onion, chopped
    1 bell pepper, chopped
    2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
    1/4 cup tomato paste
2 tablespoons maple syrup (or brown sugar)
    1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (ensure it’s vegan if needed)
    1 tablespoon smoked paprika
    1 teaspoon chili powder
    1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
    Salt and pepper to taste
4 hamburger buns (use gluten-free if needed)
Optional toppings: pickles, coleslaw, or extra hot sauce

Instructions

Drain and rinse the canned jackfruit. Use your hands or two forks to shred the jackfruit into small pieces, removing any seeds or tough pieces. Set aside.

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic, smoked paprika, chili powder, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute to allow the spices to become fragrant.
  3. Add the shredded jackfruit to the pan and stir to coat it with the spices and vegetables. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well to combine.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken, and the jackfruit will absorb the flavors.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Spoon the jackfruit mixture onto your hamburger buns and serve immediately. Add optional toppings like pickles, coleslaw, or hot sauce for extra flavor.

Notes

  1. For extra heat, add more chili powder, chopped fresh chilies, or a splash of hot sauce to the mixture.
  2. If you prefer a smoky flavor, increase the smoked paprika or add a dash of liquid smoke.
  3. Top with vegan cheese for a creamy twist.
  4. For added veggies, include grated carrots, zucchini, or mushrooms in the mixture.
