An Italian sub sandwich, also known as a hoagie or grinder, is a hearty sandwich filled with Italian meats, cheese, fresh veggies, and zesty condiments. It’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or a picnic and offers a satisfying mix of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sub roll (Italian hoagie roll or baguette)
    4 slices of salami
    4 slices of pepperoni
4 slices of capicola (or ham)
    4 slices of provolone cheese
    4 slices of mozzarella cheese
    1/4 cup of shredded lettuce
    1/4 cup of sliced tomatoes
1/4 cup of sliced red onions
1/4 cup of sliced pickles (optional)
    1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar
    1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
    Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the sub rolls lengthwise, leaving one side intact to form a hinge.
  2. Drizzle olive oil and red wine vinegar on the inside of each roll.
  3. Layer the meats (salami, pepperoni, and capicola) evenly inside the roll.
  4. Add provolone and mozzarella cheese slices on top of the meats.
  5. Layer shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onions, and pickles (if using) on top of the cheese.
  6. Sprinkle dried oregano, salt, and pepper over the vegetables.
  7. Close the sandwich, cut into desired portions, and serve immediately. Optionally, refrigerate for later.

Notes

  • Add avocado slices for extra creaminess.
  • For a spicier version, add sliced jalapeños or pepperoncini.
  • Try a grilled version by placing the assembled sandwich on a skillet or panini press to toast the bread and melt the cheese.
