Instant Pot Split Pea Soup is a hearty and comforting one-pot meal made with tender split peas, vegetables, and savory seasonings. Creamy, flavorful, and easy to prepare, this soup is perfect for cozy dinners, meal prep, or chilly days.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried split peas, rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 smoked ham hock or 1 cup diced ham, optional
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode and heat the olive oil.
  2. Add onion, carrots, and celery, cooking until softened.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
  4. Add the rinsed split peas, broth, ham hock or diced ham if using, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Stir well and secure the lid.
  6. Cook on high pressure for 15 minutes.
  7. Allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 to 15 minutes before carefully releasing any remaining pressure.
  8. Remove the bay leaf and ham hock if used. Shred any meat from the ham hock and return it to the soup.
  9. Stir the soup well. If a smoother texture is desired, use an immersion blender briefly.
  10. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve warm.

Notes

  • Split peas do not require soaking before cooking.
  • For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth and omit the ham.
  • If the soup becomes too thick after cooling, add extra broth or water when reheating.
  • This soup freezes well for up to 3 months.
  • Serve with crusty bread, crackers, or sandwiches for a complete meal.
