A cool, refreshing iced coffee made with strong chilled coffee, ice, and your choice of milk or cream. Customize it with simple syrup and vanilla for an easy coffee-shop-style drink at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup strongly brewed coffee
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • ¼ cup whole milk, half-and-half, or preferred milk
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons simple syrup or sweetener of choice, optional
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional

Instructions

  1. Brew the coffee slightly stronger than usual to account for dilution from the ice.
  2. Let the brewed coffee cool briefly, then transfer it to a covered container and refrigerate until completely chilled.
  3. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  4. Pour the chilled coffee over the ice, leaving room for milk or cream.
  5. Add the whole milk, half-and-half, or preferred milk.
  6. Add simple syrup or another sweetener if desired and stir thoroughly.
  7. Stir in the optional vanilla extract for additional flavor.
  8. Taste and adjust the milk or sweetener to your preference.
  9. Serve immediately while cold.

Notes

  • Brewing the coffee slightly stronger helps maintain its flavor as the ice melts.
  • For the least dilution, chill the coffee completely before pouring it over ice.
  • Simple syrup dissolves more easily in cold coffee than granulated sugar.
  • For vanilla iced coffee, add vanilla syrup or vanilla extract.
  • For caramel or mocha iced coffee, stir in caramel or chocolate syrup.
  • For a dairy-free version, use oat, almond, soy, or coconut milk.
  • Store extra plain brewed coffee covered in the refrigerator and use within 3 to 4 days for the best flavor.
  • Freeze leftover brewed coffee in ice cube trays and use the coffee cubes to prevent the drink from becoming watery.
  • For quick morning preparation, brew and refrigerate the coffee the night before.
