A simple and refreshing homemade mint tea made by steeping fresh mint leaves in hot water. Enjoy it warm and soothing or chilled over ice with optional honey and lemon.

Ingredients

  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Water
  • Honey or granulated sugar, optional
  • Fresh lemon juice or lemon slices, optional

Instructions

  1. Rinse the fresh mint leaves thoroughly under cool running water and gently pat them dry. Lightly crush or rub a few leaves between your fingers to release their aromatic oils.
  2. Bring the water to a boil, then remove it from the heat.
  3. Place the mint leaves in a teapot, heatproof pitcher, or mug. Pour the hot water over the leaves and steep for 5 to 7 minutes. For stronger tea, add more mint or steep slightly longer.
  4. Strain the tea into cups to remove the mint leaves. If desired, add honey or granulated sugar while the tea is warm and stir until dissolved.
  5. Serve warm with fresh mint or lemon. For iced mint tea, allow the tea to cool completely, refrigerate until chilled, and serve over ice.

Notes

  • For a stronger mint flavor, use additional fresh mint rather than dramatically increasing the steeping time.
  • Dried mint can replace fresh mint, but use a smaller amount because its flavor is more concentrated.
  • For Moroccan-style mint tea, steep fresh mint with green tea and sweeten generously with sugar.
  • For ginger mint tea, add a few thin slices of fresh ginger while the mint steeps.
  • Store strained mint tea in a covered jar or pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To reheat, warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave without bringing the tea back to a boil.
