A refreshing classic cocktail made with bourbon, fresh mint, simple syrup, and plenty of crushed ice. Cooling mint and gentle sweetness balance the warmth and complexity of the bourbon.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/4 oz simple syrup, or to taste
  • Crushed ice
  • 1 fresh mint sprig for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the fresh mint leaves in the bottom of a julep cup or sturdy rocks glass and add the simple syrup.
  2. Gently press the mint with a muddler or the back of a spoon just enough to release its aromatic oils. Avoid aggressively crushing or tearing the leaves.
  3. Pour in the bourbon and stir briefly to combine it with the mint and simple syrup.
  4. Fill the glass generously with crushed ice and stir until the outside of the cup or glass becomes thoroughly chilled.
  5. Add more crushed ice to create a mound over the top of the drink.
  6. Lightly clap the fresh mint sprig between your hands to release its aroma, then tuck it into the crushed ice. Serve immediately, preferably with a short straw positioned near the mint.

Notes

  • Gently muddle the mint rather than crushing it aggressively, which can introduce bitter or grassy flavors.
  • Use plenty of crushed ice for rapid chilling and the gradual dilution characteristic of a Mint Julep.
  • Simple syrup can be prepared ahead and refrigerated in a clean, airtight container.
  • For variations, add peach puree, muddled blackberries, maple syrup, or ginger syrup.
  • For an alcohol-free version, replace the bourbon with chilled unsweetened tea, an alcohol-free whiskey alternative, or sparkling water.
  • Do not assemble the cocktail far in advance because the crushed ice will melt and dilute the drink.
