Hot Chocolate with Chocolate Chips is a rich, creamy homemade drink made with real melted chocolate for a smooth, velvety texture. Cocoa, vanilla, and a pinch of salt deepen the chocolate flavor for an easy and comforting treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, optional
  • Mini marshmallows, for serving
  • Whipped cream, for serving
  • Chocolate shavings or extra chocolate chips, optional

Instructions

  1. Pour the whole milk into a medium saucepan and place it over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the unsweetened cocoa powder and whisk until completely blended with no noticeable lumps.
  3. Heat the milk until hot and steaming, but do not allow it to boil.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  5. Whisk continuously until the chocolate chips are completely melted and the hot chocolate is smooth and creamy.
  6. Taste and add the optional granulated sugar if additional sweetness is desired.
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract and a small pinch of salt.
  8. If using heavy cream, stir it into the hot chocolate and gently warm for another minute without boiling.
  9. Remove the saucepan from the heat and divide the hot chocolate between two mugs.
  10. Top with mini marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or extra chocolate chips and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips provide rich chocolate flavor without making the drink excessively sweet.
  • For peppermint hot chocolate, add a small amount of peppermint extract after removing the saucepan from the heat and garnish with crushed peppermint candy.
  • For mocha hot chocolate, add instant espresso powder or a shot of freshly brewed espresso.
  • Dark or bittersweet chocolate chips can be substituted for a deeper, less sweet chocolate flavor.
  • For white hot chocolate, replace the semi-sweet chocolate chips with white chocolate chips and omit the cocoa powder.
  • Add cinnamon, nutmeg, or a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper for a warm spiced variation.
  • Replace a small portion of the milk with heavy cream for an especially rich and creamy drink.
  • Store leftover hot chocolate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat gently in a saucepan over low heat while whisking frequently, adding a splash of milk if the drink becomes too thick.
  • Avoid boiling the hot chocolate because excessive heat can affect its smooth texture.
