These Hooters-inspired onion rings feature thick slices of sweet onion coated in a light, crispy, well-seasoned batter. They’re perfect as a restaurant-style appetizer or side dish served with your favorite dipping sauces.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions, slice them into thick rings, and separate the rings.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
  5. Gradually combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until a smooth batter forms.
  6. Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off.
  7. Carefully lower the battered onion rings into the hot oil in small batches.
  8. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Transfer the onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  10. Serve immediately with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use sweet onions for the best flavor and texture.
  • Pat onion rings dry before battering to help the coating adhere.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra heat or use smoked paprika for a deeper smoky flavor.
  • For an extra crispy coating, dip battered rings in panko breadcrumbs before frying.
  • Buttermilk can be substituted for regular milk for a richer batter.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in a 375°F (190°C) oven or air fryer for 5–8 minutes.
