Hong Kong French Toast is a rich and indulgent café-style dish made with thick bread filled with peanut butter, dipped in egg batter, and fried until golden and crispy. Topped with butter and syrup, this comforting treat is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick white bread
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Maple syrup or condensed milk for serving
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Fresh fruit (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Spread the peanut butter evenly between two slices of bread to create sandwiches.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat.
  4. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides evenly.
  5. Carefully place the sandwiches into the hot oil.
  6. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Transfer the French toast to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. Place the French toast on serving plates and top with butter.
  9. Drizzle generously with maple syrup or condensed milk before serving.

Notes

  • Use Nutella, jam, or sweet red bean paste instead of peanut butter for different flavor variations.
  • Brioche bread creates an extra rich and fluffy texture.
  • Reheat leftovers in an oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
  • Neutral oils such as vegetable or canola oil work best for frying.
  • Serve with fresh fruit or ice cream for a dessert-style presentation.
