Honeycomb Bread is a soft, fluffy pull-apart bread arranged in a beautiful honeycomb pattern with buttery layers and optional sweet or savory fillings. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dinner, it’s a stunning homemade bread that’s fun to share.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 egg mixed with 1 tbsp milk for egg wash
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)
  • Optional fillings: mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic butter, fresh herbs, chocolate spread, or cinnamon sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the eggs, melted butter, vegetable oil, salt, and flour, then mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Divide the dough into equal portions and flatten each piece into a circle.
  6. Add your desired filling to the center of each piece if using, then seal the edges to form smooth balls.
  7. Arrange the dough balls closely together in a greased round baking pan to create the honeycomb pattern.
  8. Cover and let the dough rise again for 30 to 45 minutes.
  9. Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and fully baked.
  11. Cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Bread flour creates a slightly chewier texture, while all-purpose flour makes a soft, tender loaf.
  • Prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate for a slow overnight rise if desired.
  • Customize with savory fillings like cheese and herbs or sweet fillings such as chocolate spread or cinnamon sugar.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 days, refrigerate for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat in a 325°F (163°C) oven for 8 to 10 minutes or microwave individual portions for 15 to 20 seconds.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, soups, or your favorite spreads.
