Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 to 6 hamburger buns
  • Sliced green onions or sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook the diced onion for about 4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground chicken and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, and paprika.
  6. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir until the chicken is evenly coated.
  7. Mix the cornstarch with the water to make a slurry, then stir it into the skillet.
  8. Simmer for 3 to 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  9. Spoon the honey garlic chicken onto toasted hamburger buns.
  10. Garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey for ground chicken if preferred.
  • Add diced bell peppers or shredded carrots for extra vegetables.
  • Mix in crushed red pepper flakes or sriracha for a spicy version.
  • Top with coleslaw for added crunch.
  • Serve the filling over rice, noodles, baked potatoes, or lettuce wraps instead of buns.
  • Store leftover filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze the filling for up to 3 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
  • Add a splash of water when reheating if the sauce becomes too thick.
