This soft and hearty Homemade Whole Wheat Bread is made with wholesome whole wheat flour and simple pantry ingredients for a delicious, bakery-style loaf. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying warm with butter.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups bread flour or all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, honey, and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the olive oil, salt, whole wheat flour, and part of the bread flour.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place the loaf into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan and let it rise again until it crowns above the rim, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  8. Sprinkle rolled oats over the top if desired.
  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Substitute maple syrup or brown sugar for the honey if preferred.
  • Add sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, or chia seeds for extra texture and nutrition.
  • Mix rolled oats into the dough for a heartier loaf.
  • Fresh herbs such as rosemary or thyme make a delicious savory variation.
  • Replace part of the whole wheat flour with white whole wheat flour for a lighter texture.
  • Store at room temperature in an airtight container or bread bag for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze sliced bread for up to 3 months for easy thawing.
  • Refresh slices in the toaster or warm the loaf briefly in a low oven before serving.
