Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Optional: ground beef or sausage
  • Optional: fresh basil
  • Optional: Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: mushrooms

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and translucent.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste, then stir until combined.
  5. Season with sugar, salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes.
  6. Pour in the water and stir well.
  7. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
  8. Reduce the heat to low and cook uncovered for 30 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavorful.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  10. Serve warm over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta.
