Homemade Peppermint Bark is a festive no-bake treat featuring layers of rich dark chocolate, creamy white chocolate, and crunchy peppermint candy. It is easy to make ahead for holiday parties, dessert trays, or homemade gifts.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces semisweet or dark chocolate, chopped
  • 12 ounces white chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/2 cup crushed candy canes or peppermint candies
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract for the dark chocolate layer, optional

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet or 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper.
  2. Place the semisweet or dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 20- to 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until completely melted and smooth.
  3. If desired, stir the optional 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract into the melted dark chocolate.
  4. Pour the melted dark chocolate onto the prepared pan and spread it into an even layer about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Refrigerate for 10 to 15 minutes, just until the chocolate is mostly set but not completely hard.
  6. Place the white chocolate in a clean, dry microwave-safe bowl and melt in 20-second intervals, stirring frequently until smooth.
  7. Stir 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract into the melted white chocolate.
  8. Carefully spread the white chocolate over the dark chocolate layer, working gently to keep the layers separate.
  9. While the white chocolate is still soft, sprinkle the crushed candy canes evenly over the top and gently press larger pieces into the chocolate.
  10. Refrigerate for 30 to 45 minutes, or until completely firm.
  11. Lift the bark from the pan and break it into irregular pieces by hand, or cut it with a sharp knife for more uniform pieces.

Notes

  • Do not let the dark chocolate layer become completely hard before adding the white chocolate, as this can cause the layers to separate.
  • Use dry bowls and utensils when melting chocolate, and heat white chocolate gently to prevent it from becoming grainy or scorched.
  • For extra crunch, stir some crushed peppermint candy directly into the melted white chocolate before spreading.
  • Crushed chocolate cookies, pretzels, or toasted nuts can be added for extra texture.
  • Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for 1 to 2 weeks, or refrigerate if the room is warm.
  • Separate refrigerated pieces with parchment or wax paper to prevent sticking.
  • Freeze in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Allow the sealed container to gradually reach room temperature before opening to help minimize condensation.
