These Homemade Mozzarella Sticks feature a crispy golden coating wrapped around warm, gooey melted mozzarella cheese. They are a restaurant-style appetizer that’s easy to make at home and perfect for parties, game days, or family movie nights.

Ingredients

  • 8 mozzarella string cheese sticks or mozzarella cheese sticks
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Marinara sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the mozzarella sticks in half if you prefer smaller portions.
  2. Place the flour in one shallow bowl.
  3. Whisk together the eggs and milk in a second bowl.
  4. Combine the Italian breadcrumbs, panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and black pepper in a third bowl.
  5. Coat each mozzarella stick in flour, dip it into the egg mixture, then coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture.
  6. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating to create a thicker crust.
  7. Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks for at least 1 hour until firm.
  8. Heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry the mozzarella sticks for 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown, then drain on paper towels. Alternatively, bake at 425°F (220°C) for 8 to 10 minutes or air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 6 to 8 minutes.
  10. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Freezing before cooking helps keep the cheese from leaking out.
  • Double-coating the mozzarella sticks creates an extra crispy crust.
  • Use pepper Jack cheese for a spicy variation.
  • Serve with marinara, ranch, garlic aioli, pesto, or spicy marinara for dipping.
  • Freeze breaded uncooked mozzarella sticks for up to 2 months and cook directly from frozen with a slightly longer cooking time.
