Homemade ketchup is a rich, tangy, and slightly sweet condiment made from simple pantry ingredients. It offers a fresher, customizable flavor that pairs perfectly with a variety of dishes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups tomato puree or crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch of ground cloves or allspice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add tomato puree, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and honey or sugar to a saucepan.
  2. Stir in salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and optional spices.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  4. Reduce heat to low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning, sweetness, or acidity as needed.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  7. Transfer to a jar or bottle and refrigerate.

Notes

  • Simmer longer for a thicker consistency.
  • Add cayenne or chili powder for a spicy variation.
