Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add a few tablespoons of milk and whisk until a smooth paste forms.
  3. Gradually pour in the remaining milk while whisking continuously.
  4. Heat the mixture over medium heat until hot but not boiling.
  5. Add the chopped chocolate and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  6. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Pour into mugs.
  8. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.
  9. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Add peppermint extract for a festive peppermint variation.
  • Stir in cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne for Mexican-style hot chocolate.
  • Add a shot of espresso for a mocha version.
  • Use dark chocolate for a richer flavor or white chocolate for a sweeter variation.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Add a splash of milk when reheating if the hot chocolate thickens.
