This Homemade French Pesto Onion Dip combines sweet caramelized onions with creamy sour cream, mayonnaise, and fresh basil pesto for a rich, savory appetizer. It’s perfect for serving with chips, crackers, fresh vegetables, or as a flavorful sandwich spread.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup basil pesto
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft, golden, and deeply caramelized.
  3. Remove the onions from the heat and let them cool completely.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, cream cheese, basil pesto, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  6. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the mixture until evenly combined.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired.
  9. Serve chilled with potato chips, crackers, toasted bread, pretzels, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • Substitute Greek yogurt for some or all of the sour cream for a lighter version.
  • Stir in grated Parmesan for extra savory flavor.
  • Add crispy bacon for a smoky variation.
  • Mix in chopped sun-dried tomatoes for added richness.
  • Use spinach pesto instead of basil pesto for a different flavor profile.
  • Add crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and stir before serving.
  • Freezing is not recommended because the dairy ingredients may separate.
