Homemade Flour Tortillas are soft, flexible, and made with just a few pantry staples for fresh, delicious flavor. They’re perfect for tacos, burritos, wraps, quesadillas, and countless other meals.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil, lard, or shortening
  • 1 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add the vegetable oil, lard, or shortening and mix until the flour resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually pour in the warm water while mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 10 to 12 equal portions and roll each into a ball.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle.
  8. Heat a dry skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat.
  9. Cook each tortilla for 30 to 60 seconds on the first side until bubbles appear, then flip and cook for another 20 to 30 seconds.
  10. Stack the cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft until serving.

Notes

  • Substitute part of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier tortilla.
  • Add dried herbs, garlic powder, chili powder, or smoked paprika for extra flavor.
  • Use avocado oil instead of vegetable oil if preferred.
  • Roll smaller tortillas for tacos or larger ones for burritos and wraps.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 days, refrigerate for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 3 months with parchment paper between each tortilla.
  • Reheat in a hot skillet or microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel until warm and pliable.
