Hasselback French toast is a creative twist on the classic breakfast, featuring sliced bread soaked in custard and cooked until golden with a soft interior and crisp edges. It’s perfect for customizing with sweet or savory fillings.

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Optional: sliced fruit (strawberries, bananas)
  • Optional: cream cheese or Nutella
  • Optional: maple syrup or powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Carefully slice each piece of bread into thin sections without cutting all the way through.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
  3. Dip each sliced bread piece into the custard, ensuring it seeps between the cuts.
  4. Insert fruit or fillings like cream cheese between the slices if desired.
  5. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  6. Cook the bread for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove from skillet and add toppings like syrup or powdered sugar.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use brioche or challah for best texture.
  • Make it savory by omitting sugar and adding cheese or herbs.
  • Add chocolate chips or nut butter for a dessert-style version.
  • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for an alternative cooking method.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet or oven for best texture.
