Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for gravy)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form into oval patties.
  3. Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter and cook sliced onions until soft and caramelized.
  6. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir to coat.
  7. Gradually whisk in beef broth to prevent lumps.
  8. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
  9. Return patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them.
  10. Simmer for a few minutes to blend flavors.
  11. Serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the beef mixture to keep patties tender.
  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • Use beef stock for a richer taste.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Add a splash of broth when reheating if gravy thickens.
