Flavorful homemade gyros made with seasoned meat, fresh vegetables, and creamy yogurt sauce wrapped in warm pita bread. This Mediterranean classic is hearty, fresh, and perfect for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 onion, grated
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 pita breads
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the ground meat, garlic, grated onion, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into a loaf or patties and cook in a skillet or oven over medium heat until fully cooked and browned on the outside, about 20–25 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, prepare the sauce by mixing yogurt, lemon juice, a clove of minced garlic, and a pinch of salt.
  4. Slice the cooked meat into thin strips.
  5. Warm the pita bread in a pan or oven.
  6. Assemble the gyros by placing meat onto the pita, then topping with tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion.
  7. Drizzle with yogurt sauce, wrap, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use chicken instead of lamb or beef for a lighter option.
  • Add feta cheese or lettuce for extra flavor and texture.
  • Grill the meat for a smoky taste.
  • Store cooked meat separately in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Keep sauce and vegetables separate until serving to avoid sogginess.
